A Chauffeurs Guide to the Top 5 Hotels in Derby
As an airport transfer chauffeur i’m constantly going back and forth between derby hotels and various UK airports listening to my clients equally praise and criticise the places they have stayed and it got me thinking, “where would i stay in Derby ?”.
So with this in mind i’ve put together my list of the top 5 hotels in Derby from the point of view of a chauffeur. Its not an exhaustive list and Derby really does have a plethora of quality hotels within the city and the beautiful countryside that surrounds it so its just my musings and a bit of local Derby info if you are thinking of of visiting the area.
Best Business Hotel in Derby
Close to Derby city centre, easy access from the main roads and dedicated meeting rooms and business facility make Jurys Inn the number one choice for most of my airport transfer clients working out of Derby city centre. Handily Its only a stones throw away from some of Derby’s best real ale pubs and its historic cathedral quarter full of independent shops and restaurants.
Best for the Football
The city of Derby is host to some top class sporting venues such as the Derby Arena, Derbyshire County Cricket Ground and none more so than the Derby County Football Clubs’ Pride Park Stadium. With the Rams currently flirting with promotion from the Championship to the Premier League now is a great time to stop at the Pentahotel in the heart of Derbys Pride Park and see what all the fuss is about.

Best for sightseeing in the City
Close to the shops and Derbys nightlife in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter lies Derbys Cathedral Quarter Hotel. Built in 1894 for the newly established Derby City Council the distinctive building has spent time as a police station and police museum before being transformed in 2006 by Finesse Hotel group into the a 38 room hotel, restaurant and bar. In 2010 the restaurant provided a three course meal for HRH Her Majesty The Queen so as the saying goes “if its good enough for Liz its good enou….. well you get the idea ! 😀
Best for Golf
I don’t have many clients who come in to Derby specifically to play golf but with three excellent hotels with courses within spitting distance of Derby city centre this was going to be a tough choice. After much deliberation I have gone for Horsley Lodge Hotel and Golf course as the best Golfing hotel in Derby as recommended by several of my regular clients. I cant tell you much about the course as the nearest i’ve got to the fairway is the car park after an airport transfer but the 14 room hotel dates back to the 1870s when it was built as a wedding gift by the Earl of Stainsbury and sits within a 71 par 18 hole golf course

Best for a romantic break
This is another tough one to choose as my own personal choice would be different to where i take the majority of newly weds after their wedding.
Personally, if i was choosing somewhere for a romantic get away for Mrs A52 Cars ( which is highly unlikely after 20 years of married bliss lol) id look at somewhere like Derbys Breadsall Priory. Situated in 300 acres of immaculately landscaped grounds in the spectacular Derbyshire countryside, the historic hotel is apparently the oldest Marriott in the world with rooms rooms dating back to 1260 ! As well as its impeccable history it also has two 18 hole golf courses for when you’ve had enough of romance and a signature spa and indoor heated pool to keep your other half pampered.
However the place i tend to visit most regularly when doing the going away car for newly weds in Derby has to be the Farmhouse Hotel in Mackworth just on the outskirts of Derby. Situated in what was once an 18th century farmhouse, The Farmhouse at Mackworth has found its home in this beautiful building blending old with new and featuring 10 boutique bedrooms and landscaped gardens.
