100 years of the Cheltenham Gold Cup
With the first Gold Cup race being run at Cheltenham in 1924 this year marks the centenary of the most iconic cup in horse racing. 100 years ago the first race was won by Red Splash, ridden by Dick Rees at odds of 5/1. The prize pot for winning the first Cheltenham Gold Cup was £685 (approximately £33500 in todays money). This year’s Gold Cup winning horse will win a staggering £351998.08 to be split between, Jockey, owner and trainer.
